Böll
(1917-1985) A leftist-catholic writer and
pacifist, he refused to join the Hitler Youth, and was in
opposition to Nazism. After the war he became known for his
critiques of the Catholic Church and the right-wing German

Anecdote
to the Decline of the Work Ethic: Short story which mocks
ideas about "work ethic" and how one should work hard to assure
themselves of a better future. Shows how misguided those are who
work until they die, although they dislike work, because they
have convinced themselves that in this way they will ensure a
happy retirement, ignoring that they are throwing
their lives away for the years one is must uncertain of
reaching.
